My grandfather, Peter S. Vento, left his home in Poughkeepsie at the age of 18, and moved across the river to Newburgh.
He lived on Gifford Avenue and worked as a salesman for Friedman’s Department Store, 69 William St. in Newburgh. Soon he was buyer, then manager and when Morris Friedman retired, Pete bought the store and the building. Pete married there and was father to his children, Don and Velma. "The Town of Newburgh is one of the oldest Towns in New YorkState. Established in 1763, Newburgh is a city located in Orange County, New York, , 60 miles (97 km) north of New York City on the Hudson River. The Newburgh area was first settled in the early 18th century by the Germans and British. During the American Revolution, Newburgh served as the headquarters of the Continental Army. " --Wikpedia |
